The question comes up regularly with growing organisations: at what point do you need a full-time technology leader, and when does a fractional arrangement make more sense? The answer depends less on company size than on the nature and frequency of the technology decisions you are making.

What a full-time CTO actually does

A full-time CTO manages people, owns the technology strategy, and is accountable for delivery. In a technology company, that role is usually full and then some. In a professional services firm, a non-profit, or a mid-sized retailer, the volume of technology decisions may not justify a full-time senior hire. Particularly when the fully loaded cost of a senior technology leader in Canada runs CAD 180,000 to CAD 250,000 per year, including benefits and overhead.

Where a fractional arrangement fits

A fractional CTO retainer makes sense when technology decisions are coming up regularly but not constantly, when the organisation does not have internal capacity to evaluate those decisions confidently, and when the cost of a wrong decision is material but not catastrophic.

The GridPulse TechZone retainer starts at CAD 1,800 per month. It is not a substitute for a full-time hire in a technology-dependent business. It is a practical option for organisations that need senior technology thinking available on a reliable basis without the overhead of a permanent role.

The transition point

Most organisations that move from a fractional arrangement to a full-time hire do so when one of three things happens: the volume of technology decisions increases to the point where a monthly retainer is not enough, the organisation takes on a large technology project that requires dedicated leadership, or the business reaches a size where a full-time technology leader is expected by investors, partners, or regulators.

A fractional arrangement can also be useful during the transition. Covering the gap while a full-time hire is being recruited, or providing continuity during an onboarding period.

If you are trying to work out which arrangement fits your situation, the discovery call is a good place to think it through. There is no obligation and it takes thirty minutes.
